There's always something going on in the mermaid world. In this article I'm sharing some recent happenings relating to the mermaid community.

Mermaids are all for diversity and inclusion, so it's no surprise that this queer Little Mermaid is in the works.
"Little M" is a reimagining of the Little Mermaid, that is led by trans and non binary directors. It will be coming to the London theater The Place.
The Little Mermaid is heralded as a queer allegory by many, citing Hans Christian Anderson's unrequited homosexual relationships as inspiration for the book.
This production will be "an underwater fairytale world reimagined for a new generation."
Sea King takes a stand

Javier Bardem, who portrayed King Triton in the live action Little Mermaid in 2023, has spoken out against the genocide in Gaza. At the Emmys in 2025, he made a statement by wearing a keffiyeh, a staple of Palestinian culture.
He also told the press, "Here I am today, denouncing the genocide in Gaza. I am talking about the IAGS, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, who study thoroughly genocide and has deemed it genocide. That's why we ask for a commercial and diplomatic blockade and also sanctions on Israel to stop the genocide. Free Palestine."
The Emmys program largely avoided politics, but Bardem didn't let that hold him back.

Washington Post mermaid article sparks mermaid hate comments
In July, 2025, Washington Post released an article sharing about mermaiding. They highlighted how mermaiding became an escape from a grim reality for many in DC.
You would think it is a good thing to spread the word about this fin-tastic hobby, but it sparked many hate comments, unfortunately. Many people called mermaids "delusional" and "mentally ill," among other things.
In my response video, I summarized the article and clapped back against those haters.
Mermaid event: Sea-cret Santa
Mermaid season may be ending, but that doesn't mean all mermaid activity will cease. When the summer winds down, mermaiding will still be around, especially if you live somewhere that is warm year round.
If you swim on down to Florida this winter, you may get to participate in Florida Springs Mermaids' Christmas mermaid event.
In Alexander Spring, Florida, this mermaid pod is hosting their annual "sea"cret Santa, where there will be a gift exchange and a group swim.
Are mermaid blogs dying?
I've scoured the internet to find some of the best mermaid blogs, only to find that many of them haven't posted in months, even years. As an avid reader and mermaid blogger myself, this made me sad.
Is the era of blogging coming to an end? Are people losing interest in mermaid blogs? It would seem that with the rise of short form video content and AI taking over writing in many cases, that blogging could become a thing of the past.
But I refuse! I'll keep on writing my blog, despite a low reader count. If anyone has a blog that they are still active on, let me know so we can connect and maybe do guest posts for each other! I'm always looking for collaboration opportunities with other merfolk.
