Are you a professional mermaid looking to level up your act? This article is for you.
Being a professional mermaid is all about bringing fun and magic to a children's party. It's great to look pretty in your tail and swim around and be bubbly, but after a while things things might get boring if you don't have some games or activities planned.
Have no worries! Here are some great ideas to incorporate into your mermaid gigs.
Children's books
Storytelling is a big aspect of being a professional mermaid. Kids will ask you all sorts of questions about mermaids and want to hear fun stories. It's a great idea to prepare some little stories to tell the kids. I also recommend bringing a few picture books.
There are many mermaid and under the sea themed picture books that kids will love. Here are just a few:

Temporary tattoos
Kids can't resist the siren's call to have temporary tattoos placed all over themselves. With pretty colors and fun mermaid designs, they are sure to bring some excitement to your gig.
Administering temporary tattoos eats up some time, and gives kids something to enjoy for the rest of the day. Here's a great set of tattoos with mermaid and ocean designs.

Guessing games
20 questions- With this game you have to think of a person, place, or thing. Then kids will try to guess by asking no more than 20 yes or no questions. They'll want to ask things like, "is it an animal?" or "is it a place?" or "is it a food?"
"I'm thinking of a number from 1 to 20" - This is just a quick little game you could play in which children try to guess as close to the number you're thinking as possible. It's similar to 20 questions.
Charades- With charades, you get to be goofy and bring out your pantomime skills. You can have kids choose something to act out without speaking, and everyone has to guess what it is.
Drawing game- Once at a gig I brought a little notepad and pencils to play a drawing game. This is where you draw something and people have to try and guess what you're drawing while you're working on it.
Face painting
Face painting is another great activity for a mermaid party, similar to the temporary tattoos. Having a colorful face with a gorgeous mermaid design will make kids feel extra magical and make for some great imaginative play.
If you want to learn how to do face paint, get a kit like this one that comes with a guide book, and practice on paper, yourself, or on friends and family. It could even be a fun activity for a family gathering that the kids enjoy and also gets you some practice.

Singalongs
Mermaids are known for their singing voices, so having a singalong makes perfect sense. You don't need to have the most beautiful voice to sing these kid's songs.
Songs to sing:
If you're Happy and you Know it- This is a classic kid's song that they will most likely all know. You can clap along with them, and change some of the verses to say things like "if you're happy and you know it shout "hooray!" or "if you're happy and you know it make a splash!"
Baby Shark- This is a pretty easy song to learn and many kids will already know how it goes. To make things extra fun you can bring a little shark stuffed animal or toy.
Itsy Bitsy Spider- This is a fun song that has some hand gestures that go with it. Learn how to do them so you can show the kids, in case they don't know already.
I'm a Little Teapot- This is another cute song that many kids are familiar with. It also has some hand motions that go with it. Make sure to memorize them before the gig.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star- This is a classic song that kids usually learn as a toddler. Make it extra special by bringing a starfish to dance with while you sing it.
Disney songs - Many kids are in love with Disney movies and can sing the songs word for word. Find out what Disney songs the kids love and get everyone singing and dancing.
Ask the kids- It's fine to allow kids to request songs. If you don't know the lyrics, you could have the kids teach them to you, which becomes a fun activity for everyone to learn a new song.
Balloon art
This is a special skill that takes some learning and practice, but if you master it you are sure to bring some smiles to young faces as you create animals, flowers, hats, and more.
Try out this kit that comes with an instructions manual.

Bubbles
Having bubbles makes perfect sense for a mermaid gig. You can get a little bubble machine to have kids run through the bubbles or try to pop them.
Another good way to include bubbles is to bring multiple bottles of soap with bubble wands so kids can blow their own bubbles.

Here's a great set of bubble wands so there will be enough for each kid to have their own.
Beach volleyball

Beach balls can provide loads of fun for a kid's party, whether or not it's in a pool. I brought one to my first ever mermaid gig and the kids had a blast. Here are some great mermaid scale beach balls.
Tag (for a pool gig)
The game of tag and variations date back thousands of years! It's a game that will never get old. It's perfect to play at a pool party mermaid gig. It's totally free; no balls, toys, or props required.
Choose one person, who will be "it." Everyone gets into place and you say, "GO!" Then the one who is "it" must swim around and try to "tag" people. When they tag someone, they will shout, "Tag, you're it!" and then that person must chase everyone around.
You'll hear laughter and screams of fun, all the while children are getting good exercise and bonding with their friends.
Swim lesson
A pool party gig is a wonderful opportunity to teach kids life saving swim skills. Most of the kids at a pool party will know how to swim, but their skills may be limited and they may need practice. Then there will be kids who stay in floatees or arm bands.
This is a good time to teach the basics, such as kicking, freestyle arms, breathhold, float, or dolphin kick. You need to know these skills if you are going to be a professional mermaid that does pool gigs.
