4 Ways to Protect Your Hair at the Beach

If you're a mermaid, like me, you spend an awful lot of time in the ocean, when you can. You may feel beautiful and majestic as your hair flows behind you while swimming beneath the waves, but the harsh reality is that the ocean is not a friend to our hair.

The beach, I should say, is not a friend to our hair. You may love that natural wavy beach hair, but the salty sea water can strip your hair of moisture, making it dry and brittle. And the sun can do the same, along with fading your hair's color in time.

Luckily there are ways to protect your luscious locks. Fear not, all you lovely beach dwellers! Mermaid Liv is here to give you some tips.

Wear a hat

Hats work wonders. Not only do they look super cute, but they protect your scalp from dangerous UV rays, and help prevent your hair from fading and getting dry and brittle.

Whether it's an charming sunhat, a sporty ball cap, or a fashionable fedora, a hat is definitely your friend when it comes to beach trips. Most people think to wear sunscreen to protect their skin, but it's easy to forget that an uncovered head is not safe from the sun just because there may be thick hairs atop it.

Too much sun exposure can cause skin cancer. So if you prefer lounging on the beach it's important to cover up.

Sunscreen

I remember when I was younger my sister and I would put lemon juice in our hair before sitting in the sun to lighten it, but long-term exposure to the sun can actually cause discoloration in your hair, and even cancer.

I didn't know this for a while, but it turns out that sunscreen works on hair as well as skin. It prevents your hair from losing it's color due to the sun and protects from UV rays.

Coconut oil

The salt in the ocean can damage your hair if you don't take measures to protect it. Swimming in the sea can cause brittle, dry, frizzy hair. One thing that can shield you hair from this is to coat it in coconut oil before taking a dip.

Always shower after swimming in the ocean

As soon as you get home from your beach trip I recommend taking a shower and thoroughly washing your hair to remove all the salt water from it. This will keep it from being damaged.

So make sure to care for your hair so you can enjoy your beach day worry free and enjoy healthy mermaid hair always!
