Sometimes you want to watch a magical fiction movie or show about mermaids, and other times you want to get a glimpse into a more realistic version of mermaids.
All around the world there are people who participate in the cultural phenomenon of mermaiding. It is a hobby, profession, and competitive sport where people wear elaborate mermaid tails that are made for swimming in.
These are some documentaries that show you what it's like for mermaids, like myself. Dive into the stories of merfolk and learn about the ins and outs of mermaiding with these mermaid documentaries.
Merpeople DocuSeries on Netflix

It was kind of a big deal when Netflix released this mermaid docuseries. Not only because it's such a popular platform that could bring mermaiding to the mainstream, but for me, it was exciting because I was briefly featured in it!
Merpeople documents the stories of a handful of merfolk who are widely known in the mermaid community. Some of them include Mermaid Sparkles, The Blixunami, Morgana Alba (the founder of Circus Siren Pod), Eric Ducharme (The Mertailor), and Mermaid Che Monique, who I consider to be a friend of mine after we met during the filming of this series (at the audition for Mertailor's Mermaid Aquarium Encounter).
You get a little view into the fantastical world of mermaiding and learn some of the struggles we face. You see merpeople compete in a pageant, audition for mermaid jobs, share their stories, and accomplish their dreams.

This mermaid documentary follows the stories of 5 merpeople who share the transformative power of mermaiding.
With striking visuals and powerful storytelling, this documentary, available on Amazon Prime, explores the magic of the mermaid community from around the country.
It goes behind the scenes of the Dive Bar mermaids, divulging some professional mermaid secrets, and invoking a sense of wonder.
This documentary provides queer representation, including a transgender mermaid and explaining the allure of mermaiding for trans people.
Amazon Prime describes this documentary as empowering, inspirational, and heartwarming, and after watching it, I'd have to agree.
This 4-star mermaid documentary was released by David Lee Morea in 2023. It offers a glimpse into the world of Florida's mermaid attraction Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.
It gives insights on what it takes to be a Weeki Wachee mermaid, and highlights that they are more than professional mermaids, but also advocates for water conservation.
This documentary is an inspirational story about history, sisterhood, and environmental preservation.
Find it on Amazon Video for $2.99.
Mermaids: The Body found

This is a fun little mockumentary to watch around Halloween. It's not real, but it is still entertaining and a little spooky. When it was first released in 2012 by Animal Planet, it had many people convinced that mermaids were real.
The show follows a fictional scientific investigation into mysterious underwater recordings and a partly digested specimen found in a shark. The scientists in the show suggest this might be evidence of mermaid-like beings.
The pseudo documentary features allegedly real scientists, videos, underwater audio, and CGI to convince viewers that mermaids just might exist beyond the imagination.
