Summer is finally here! If you’re a mermaid, like me, you’re probably super eager to get out and do some mermaid swimming and take some great photos.
But the weather we’ve been having lately is the kind you may want to avoid going out in. Nonetheless, let me share some tips in case you do want to get mermaiding during a heat wave.

WATER WATER WATER -
Be sure to stay hydrated during these hot days when participating in outdoor activities. Electrolyte beverages are also a good idea. Don’t just wait until you feel thirsty. You should drink between 11-15 cups of water a day.
I recommend always having a reusable water bottle with you. When it is in sight it makes it easier to remember to hydrate.

Plenty of time in water -
Staying in the water can help keep you cool (DUH). Spending time in a pool, lake, creek, or the ocean is a great way to beat the heat. But don’t forget sunscreen and hydration. UV rays can still harm you even when you’re underwater.
You don't need a fancy in ground pool. An above ground pool can cost less than $200 and still gives you plenty of room for swimming in a tail.

SCREEN UP -
Don’t forget to apply sunscreen liberally. Reapply every 2 hours. It should be at least SPF 30. Mineral sunscreens are recommended for those with sensitive skin. Reef friendly sunscreen is advisable when swimming in a natural body of water.

Fabric tails are a better option -
Silicone traps heat and causes increased sweating. Since silicone tails are non breathable the sweat stays trapped, which can be uncomfortable and can irritate the skin. Fabric tails allow for you to feel the cool water. It is also important to be able to get out of a tail quickly in case you start to overheat and silicone tails are known to be difficult to put on and take off.
Buddy system -
One of the most important rules of mermaiding is to never go alone. Always have a buddy in case of emergencies. If you have a heat stroke and no one is with you, you are in serious trouble.
Early morning or evening swims are the best -
It is recommended to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm during a heatwave.
Avoid alcohol -
I know on a hot summer day by the water it can be nice to have a cold alcoholic drink, but be aware that alcohol has a dehydrating effect.
My favorite alcohol replacement beverage is prebiotic soda. Much healthier than alcohol or regular soda.

Avoid hot food -
Cooler foods are best to eat during a heat wave. Try fruit, like watermelon. Add grapes or blueberries to the freezer for a fruity icy treat. Salads, and sandwiches like pb and j or cheese sandwiches are a good idea. Smoothies are a delightful thing to eat when there are extreme temperatures. They provide hydration, nutrients, and have a cooling effect.
Avoid smoking -
It is advisable to avoid or limit smoking of tobacco or marijuana during a heatwave. Smoking worsens your ability to regulate fluids, and affects your body’s ability to cool itself.
Embrace a natural look -
I know you want to look pretty and get glammed up for mermaiding, but it’s a better idea to avoid heavy makeup usage. When we get hot our body sweats to cool us down, but makeup clogs your pores, trapping in sweat. With makeup in the severe heat, it is more likely to have an acne breakout or get a rash.
You don’t have to give up mermaiding just because the temperatures are extreme, but always take caution. Hope these tips help.
