Halloween is just around the corner! If you're a mermaid of the seawitch variety, then this is probably your favorite holiday. I know it's mine!

When you're part of the mermaiding community, you like to do things with mermaid flair, so this article will share how to have the most mermazing spooky season!

Watch mermaid horror movies

Nothing immerses you into the spirit of Halloween quite like watching scary movies. Here are a few of my favorite mermaid horror movies:

She Creature- Carnies capture a real mermaid and take her aboard a ship to bring her across the sea. But she's not as nice and pretty as she looks.

Mermaid Down- A mermaid is brutally mutilated by a sailor and ends up in a mental institution as a human where she battles evil.

Erzulie- Three girls on vacation accidentally unleash an ancient mermaid goddess, and she has some blood to spill. Read this article for my full review.

There are so many more scary mermaid movies to consume to get in the Halloween spirit.

Mermaid Halloween costume

Halloween costumes don't just have to be fun on Halloween night. Make it an activity to buy or prepare a mermaid costume. Then, try it on and play pretend in it. Practice a makeup look to go with it and take some spooky pictures.

Spooky mermaid photo shoot

I love making Halloween content in my mermaid tail. I've done a zombie mermaid photo shoot, a witchy mermaid photo shoot, a ghost mermaid photo shoot, and a siren photo shoot.

Flipping your fins with a spooky look is a blast and gives you something to post online and get those likes and follows.

Nautical Halloween decor

You can't let spooky season fly by without adding some decorations to your home! The act of decorating is just as fun as admiring the decor. You can find some pretty cool spooky mermaid decorations online, or make your own.

My favorite mermaid Halloween decoration is a skeleton mermaid, like this one.

These skeleton mermaids are perfect if you have a little pond or a pool. You can put them in different poses and give them accessories.

Halloween decorations can get pricey, so why not make your own?

Here are some ideas:

Use white fishnet and add some spiders for a nautical cobweb decoration. You can buy little plastic spider rings at the Dollar Tree.

Use air dry clay to sculpt a simple mermaid, then use white cloth to turn it into a ghost! Use sharpie or paint to add some black circles for the eyes and mouth.

Paint a little wall sign to say "The seawitch is in" or "beware the siren!" You can buy some wooden signs from Amazon for less than $10.

Painting seashells is another Halloween activity that taps into mermaid vibes. You can paint a spooky scenery or a skeleton inside a shell, or make oyster shell ghosts like these:

Do mermaid makeup

Halloween is a time for dressing up in ways you don't ordinarily dress. This includes getting extravagant with makeup! Halloween is the best time to experiment with different looks.

You don't have to be good at makeup to have fun administering it. Get creative! Look up some mermaid makeup tutorials that include things like face gems, scale stencils, glitter, and hues of purple, green, and blue.

This article gives some advice on mermaid makeup looks.

You can try a glamorous look, or go for something a little more spooky, like this siren makeup.

Explore coastal New England

Where better a place to channel your inner mermaid than in a cute coastal town? With its rich history, purported hauntings, and gorgeous coastlines, certain areas in New England, such as Salem, Massachussets, offer the perfect place for spooky mermaid shenanigans.

If you visit Salem around Halloween, it will be magical and spooky, but also crowded. The beaches will still be ideal for taking mermaid photos, though.

Write scary stories that involve mermaids

Throw on a spooky Halloween playlist with ambient music and get your thinking hat on.

Another great activity for celebrating Halloween like a mermaid is to write scary mermaid stories. You can include evil sirens, zombie mermaids, haunted shipwrecks, and more for a spooky story to tell around a bonfire. Bonus points if it's a beach bonfire.

You don't need to be a good writer to enjoy writing a spooky mermaid story. Just have fun and get immersed in your little fantasy world. Don't forget to share your story with friends or online!

Another idea is to make a spooky mermaid kids' book with hand drawn illustrations. This isn't too hard to do. Use blank paper and fold some pages together, binding them with staples. A kids' book doesn't require much eloquence. This gives you something fun to share with the kids in your life.

Make mermaid tarot cards

Halloween is a most bewitching time! They say the veil between the spirit and physical world is thinnest around this time. Many will embrace this with their spiritual practices, including tarot readings.

You don't have to believe it, but it is fun to make your own tarot cards. I made these tarot cards with pretty mermaid designs. Get out your colored pencils for this activity.

Make it extra fun and spooky by listening to a podcast, such as Two Girls One Ghost.

Hand out candy in your mermaid tail

If you live in a residential area where kids trick-or-treat, here's something fun to do on Halloween night! Sit outside on your porch wearing a mermaid tail with a bowl of candy. It'll make Halloween even more magical for the kids.

You can also don a mermaid tail at a trunk-or-treat event, which are often held at churches, schools, and community centers. I once participated in a trunk decorating contest where our theme was under the sea. I wore my mermaid tail and my mom was dressed as Ursula from The Little Mermaid. It was a blast! I kept my candy inside my treasure chest. The tricky part was putting my tail on in the car and scooting to the trunk.

Make it even more fun by handing out mermaid candy!
